    That is a big big explosion, there can't be many survivors from the plant area, as Sam says horrific! There was a boat containing fertiliser, off our coast on fire a number of years ago, it burnt for about 4 days and then blew up and sank one night. that explosion was heard about 20 to 30 miles away. this one looks much bigger.
    Give it full throttle

    Looking on the satellite map I wouldn't call it a "Big Plant", not by the scale of things in the US. We were all around that area for the GP last September during which we went to Galveston, when you come back over the bridge to the mainland there is Texas City where they had that big explosion a while back, now that place is huge, seeing it from the bridge at night all lit up made Fawley look tiny. One thing we learnt driving around southern Texas is the scale of their petrochemical industry. Its everywhere.

    Back to West, the small town 30miles north from Waco, we would of passed it on I35 but from the satellite it confirms its just another small country town, but it does look like the plant may of been there for a while and development has filled in around one or two sides of it which makes a question for someone to answer.

    The size of the blast will certainly have a terrible effect on the small community and it another thing this week to bear, but on the other hand with that area just being located at the end of tornado alley, they are used to destruction, but this time it is of someones making, not mother nature for once.

    Great people the Texans, they know their different. Thats why they aren't connected to the US national grid.........................just incase they go independent again!

    Here's link to aerial view of the plant. Google car didn't get that close to get a good view of the place. Looks a very dry area.

    It doesn't look like much more than a blending set up, it is very close to houses.

    Looking on the overhead Google picture, there seems to be a few of these type of tanks kicking about;
    They are for anhydrous ammonia.

    Jim, Thats the stuff thats been mentioned on several reports. Not a clue about it other than one report said it either burns or explodes in contact with air??? Anyone know what the process is with it??

    Saw a few farms/buildings with tanks like that, but assumed it normal LPG tanks. Didn't see any signs of the drilling kit with tanks last October, but they were still ripping the soil up with big cultivators then. Drilling must of been later.

    In anser to FF's questions. Don't miss the comment which further explains. Forget the video which has no relevant information.

    OMG just seen it on the news, that is one big explosion. They did say it was not a big plant, but also that there were 30t of ammonia. How awful for the local people, that is a major incident.

    Re: LA Fert Plant Explosion.

    Thanks for the links, until an old retired guy came on Sky news late last night there wasn't much in the way of technical explanations of what it actually was. One question is, if this was a relatively small plant, where are larger ones and what destruction would they be capable of??

    Old pipelines in Texas are a bit of a sore subject with some campaigners. Texas is a bit red down there!
