That's pretty scary. I'd heard about people being able to activate webcams, but in my naivety assumed it could only happen by downloading a virus through an email or something.

In the example in the video, the guy uses a simple message on a web forum with some sort of hidden code at the end which doesn't show up in the message. Although he says that he could do it because the computer he used for the demonstration had an old version of Java on it, it seems that hackers are always a step ahead of the software designers. Therefore its not beyond the realms of possibility that even with the most up to date applications these hacks can still take place.

Is there anything in forum software which prevents this, or that alerts moderators if someone adds this type of code to a message?

    Edit:
I should say that I'm not thinking of this forum specifically, just internet forums in general.

If you have Windows 7 you could use UAC User Access Control, which asks you everytime something needs to run, can be a pain but may flag up that something is asking to start your webcam.

Dont be an administrator user on your pc, as if you do get hacked they have full access to everything.

Decent antivirus will help, but as some antivirus will point out Software Vulnerabilities for you so can the keep tabs on which stuff needs updating.

Always keep windows up to date and especially the Adobe based stuff and Java.

Websites can be checked with things like https://safeweb.norton.com/ but sometimes false readings can occur.

Common sense also comes into play, 'If you get your free software from Timbuktu, don't be surprised if you pick up a tourist or two' Filesharing and software crack sites are rife with virus and are a test bed for hackers as the people that use these sites tend to over look pc security. Obviously adult sites have a tendancy for virus etc.

If when using a site you have to install a plugin to make it work then be careful also.

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 use this site to test your firewall, it will show if you have any weakness at you internet connection side. Has many useful tools on here.

Always use solid passwords, I did a survey at work and found 80% of people use the same password for everything i.e childrens name, footy team, spouses name. Use a complex password with capitals and numbers i.e Th15i5MyP455w0rD if you see what I mean

Just thought i would put some ideas/tips to all the post readers.

That's interesting, the biggest gain seems to be including a symbol or two at some point.
Do that + random upper case. and even the most sophisticated huge attack would take hours of computer time

According to that my dropbox password would take 19.31 trillion centuries to compute on a massive cracking array scenario.

I probably wouldn't be too bothered by that time.
