    slow Ford 4000

My ford 4000, is lacking a bit of speed. is there any bolt/screw on the throttle that i can undo?

I know the 4000 is 1km slower than a 3000 on the log but no way can my 4000 keep up to a neighbours 3000

    Can any one help? Thanks

Are you sure your throttle linkage is actually moving the arm on the injector pump all the way against its stop? Does your tachometer work? What does it read? Have a look on your linkages to identify any wear points/adjustments. With hand throttle set to max check that onjector pump lever is tight on max rev screw.

Ground speed will depend a lot on what tyre/wheel size you have and maube some gearing/diff ratios. Is she on 12-36 tyres?

Providing it's telling the right rev's, right?

    new speedo cable, new dash..

Is there a stopper or something on the injector pump? Because at full throttle its as far as it can go..

No way should my 4000 not to be able to catch a 3000

IIRC the 4000 should rev to 2,200 erpm; certainly a lot more than 1700. Should do about 17mph as I recall. If ever the tyres need renewing then IMO 13.6R 36 rears would help things marginally and would also look a lot better the old 12" tyres.

Surely the screw on the pump that the throttle lever hits against, can be screwed back a bit? If that doesn't give more revs, then the hole in the lever which goes over the throttle spindle must be worn or else the lid has been off the pump and the idling spring and pin have been put back in the wrong hole of the governing plate.

Inside the pump, below the top cover. I don't recommend you remove the lid though.Unless you have a new gasket for refitting, you won't stop diesel leaking out and things are rather fiddly in there.Best left to a specialist!
Can you see the adjustable stop screws that the throttle lever hits against for both high speed and idle? The high side screw should have a cover and sealing wire on it but it's maybe long gone.
Another thought, are the fuel filters and air filter clean? If it's not getting enough fuel or air,it won't rev out right either.

Yeah I know where they are alright. yes the high rev side do have a cover or a sealing wire on it infact. All filters I have replaced as I have only completed a restoration.

The high rev side, maybe I should take the cover off it and open it out a bit?

Yes,if you're certain it's only revving out to 1700 at the minute, whip off the seal and screw it out a bit. Can you get access to a hand held tachometer? The type you hold against the pto?(with extra care!) As it is at the minute,if you're registering 1700rpm,540 on the shaft would not be reachable as the engine would need to get to 1800.I would guess,to be sure the engine is not over revving past 2200rpm,you could open her out til the shaft is turning at 650+/-rpm.Just an idea!
Was it ok before the restoration?

Long shot but I've seen it, is the little arm on the injector pump tight on it's shaft? 5/16" (8mm) nut? Has the slotted hole worn out to be a bit more round? Disconnect throttle linkage and use an 8mm spanner on the nut to rev to the stop to see if you get an increase in revs.

Until 40k boxes arrived on the scene our 3000 on 14.9 x 28s would outrun nearly all other tractors around here. Our 4600 wouldn't sniff it.
