And look how the rest of the year turned out!

I'll gladly live through this cold spell in return for a proper summer..... Even if I am in the middle of lambing with zero grass and no fodder left!

A friend & neighbour said a very similar thing to me the other day....."this time last year our milkers were strip grazing good grass & we were in shirt sleeves".

Winter Wheat we drilled on the 27th Feb (yes, I know we were pushing our luck) is just sat in cold water logged soil...& will probably rot !
No grass what-so-ever...with Silage & straw stocks getting very tight !
Trying to harvest Parsnips in conditions that are worse than we have seen for 20 years !

Yes, lets hope we get a proper spring and summer this time.
Remember this time last year well, most of the barley was sown and was spreading dung and ploughing after swedes/kale and temp was 23 degrees for 3 or 4 days in a row.
Never got heat like it again. The last week of May was the only other time we got a decent spell the whole year.
Lambing starts Tuesday, hoping for a big improvement by then as all outside.

Not a nice night (indeed next few days forecasted) to be a new born lamb. Thank goodness mine are all in and I still have space to move the newborns onto undercover. Will it ever warm up though? Gonna run out of fodder before the grass starts growing, that is for sure.

I have managed to wrangle space for all of my ewes inside. although they are slightly cramped. Still, better than lambs dying...

On the plus side i have a big excess of very good hay!

I have just been out for my late night check and it is almost at freezing point, there are high winds and there is sleet coming in horizontally! So glad it is spring...

Not stopped raining here in Devon since 4.00am this morning....and still pouring.

Amber flood warning issued by the E.A ...just come in from moving some 600kg bags of fertilizer & a load of spring barley seed in to another shed that is a little bit higher. But if it keeps raining like it is at the moment it wont be safe in there either !

Re: COLD WET AND SNOW WARNINGS AGAIN?

Really bad blizzard conditions here with huge drifts. In a quandry. Lambers are sheltering so can't go and feed and bring out of shelter. Terrible for chasing bike and would leave lambs in drifts and maybe not get back to them. But want to check them - but if find something needing brought in do I take bike and then all rest of them come out of shelter? Looks like it's old fashioned shepherding with dog and stick this morning.

Pretty fed up here. Picked up 3 dead lambs this morning. All born during night. At least those born before last night seem ok.
Fields are awash. Heavy rain forecast for all day and into tonight. And cold with it. :-(

you are not alone. Pretty fed up is the flavour here too. I have one round bale left after feeding up this morning and 130 head of cattle. no chance of zerograzing today but luckily i have done every day for the last month. Got a lorry and drag of nice hay coming later which will save my sorry ass for a couple of weeks. god i hope it warms up soon. i can cope with showers but i really need warmth to get this grass going.

Re: COLD WET AND SNOW WARNINGS AGAIN?

Not brilliant here in kintrye, by far the worst day of this winter. power off, no mobiles, no radio, few inches of snow here (only 40m above sea level.) but blowing a gale, wind doing as much damage as anything. But only road in or out is closed, big drifts and stuck lorrys aparently. I a running on generator before yous ask!
really rough day to be a lamb, dont think the barley people sowed 2 weeks ago will be feeling good either.

Horrible day here in Galloway - no power since 0800 and visibility down to 10m or less at times in driving snow - thankfully no lambs as yet and hoping for no earlies - due to start on April 1st
