Everything is starting to get growing here, buds on the hedges and catkins on the willows and hazel. The first nettles have appeared and there are daisies, shepherds purse and chickweed in flower. Truly spring has sprung.

I can't cope with much more of this, I know that. Everything is permanently wet and shitty, truck, boots, clothes, absolutely fed up with it now.

Even up here, buds are on the daffodils, heaven help them when it decides to be winter - can't believe we will get away without it. This morning - heavy rain with snow. This afternoon - shirtsleeves and sunshine.

+1 to mayo, it is a toss up between having nice frozen ground but also having to cut tracks through snow drifts and thaw troughs - versus bloody slogging and sliding through mud. I put 6 tons of hardcore in a well kent sloppy place back in December - where oh where is it now . OTOH I think the grass is growing.

It does, the BBC have decided that it should be the beginning of March to make it easier for the townies to understand.

Disappointed to see so few on a "farming" forum questioning it!

    Re: Spring Is here ?

It's not really the BBC (for once) but the Met Office.
For convenience they consider March April May as spring months - and so on through the year.
It makes it simpler to compare seasons, and this does seem to be gaining wider use the last few years.

March undoubtedly is a spring month?
The Astronomical start to spring is based on the date the sun moves north of the equator and days and nights are equal length.
It isn't always the 21st exactly.

Gravesend topped 20C today, which is something of a milestone and quite early - though it often happens in March in a sheltered spot somewhere.

Yes, the Met Office who are now heavily funded by the BBC!

OK, I was generalising and you are correct spring DOES begin with the vernal equinox which is not necessarily the 21st of March.

They argue that meteorologically their "seasons" make more sense which is nonsense, climatically the seasons follow the sun, always have and always will.

Calenders have changed over the centuries as has meteorological data, the orbit of the earth around the sun hasn't.

So instead of enjoying a lovely spring day yesterday, I enjoyed a lovely spring-like day,.......................which was just as nice!

    Re: Spring Is here ?

The Met Office system is far more realistic.

Why would anyone think that Winter doesn't begin until Dec 21st - four days before Christmas.
Or that Summer doesn't begin until June 21st, just one or two days before Midsummer.
It's balmy, a bit like the weather's supposed to be this week.

Well the Met office itself used to think so!

I read an article from them a while ago, maybe late nineties or so, and they were proving or disproving the relevance of old farmers sayings.

So they came to "When the day lengthens, the cold strengthens" which they agreed with as at that time their "data" proved that we tend to have the coldest temperatures of the year after the winter solstice.

Maybe if the "data" changes in the next 10 or 15 years (as it surely will) then we'll have another reappraisal of the seasons. I mean, if data is everything, why even have all four of them the same length!!!!

    Re: Spring Is here ?

The pre-Christian/Roman calendar had more seasons such as Samhain and Imbolc - someone will know them all.
There are different 'parts' to seasons, for example winter has the dark part followed by the cold part as mentioned.
Summer has a peak growth period reaching a climax sometime in July, again like season change to those in touch with the land.

The thing is, our old records are all based on calendar months so it's impractical to split them in other ways for the purpose of comparing climate over time.
It doesn't really matter for comparison so long as the range of dates used is the same.

Just remember what happened last year around the 21st March! I pray it won't happen 2 years in a row. Was very pleasant the past couple of days. Just being able to drive the quad horizontally across the banks rather than spinning like hell at 45 degrees pointing uphill but going downhill! Little pleasures lol

Their red or white or red +white, Have a tendency to be muddy as hell when you want to dig em, rarely fetch enough, cost too much to grow, need vast amounts of water in a dry year, get too much in a wet year, and need spraying about 10 times a day,, will that do for a start,,,
oh did I mention slugs, wire worm and a myriad of other disease love them to death,,,

makes you wonder why some people even think about growing them...... Oh and the seed spuds are like miniature diamonds... Well they must be price of em,,,
