    Holstein heifer prices?

We are considering selling 80 of our home grown non pedigree Holstein Friesian heifers from a closed 9,700 litre herd which are aged 6 months up to ready to be bulled.
They are mainly by Genus AI bulls and a stock bull from a 10,000 litre pedigree herd.
They are all BVD tested, most are Huskavaked, we are in a TB4 area.
We were wondering if anyone knew what sort of price we could expect for 6 to 12 month olds, 13 to 18 months, and over 18 months
or if anyone is interested in buying them please PM us.

I sell quite a lot of cattle, albeit pedigree (very little difference these days), if well reared, the above is i would have thought a minimum, it effectively means a 12 month old is worth 738, a 15 month old bulling heifer 850, and at calving heifer at 2 years 2 months at 1260.

I would value the 12 month at 850, bulling heifer 1000 and your point of calving heifer at 1400.

If you work out your true rearing costs you will struggle at 1.20.

Sold the remaining yearling Holstein pedigree heifers at Beeston Castle this spring at around 1200, and made a similar price the previous year. Hope to have some nice Brown Swiss to sell in a couple of years

Don't forget the milk price has crashed. Struggled to get a decent price for most at Sedgemoor today!

We are currently using Bolide, Payssli, Zeus and Zipper, with some sexed Greenwich. Building the herd back up to 120, currently about 90, then selling off heifers. All but a couple are pedigree. Brought in 66 from Bavaria last year, and 8 more this year, to add to our home bred BS.

Genus choice of BS is very poor, they used to have a good selection but recently have not, zeus is a good one but throws bulls on non sexed and conception rate wasn't brilliant on sexed but nice heifers when you get them

We are looking in the first instance for kappa casein BB, and not teat shortening, but have to make a few compromises. Occasionally use some semen from Future Genetics

Yes, hesitated to make the decision, but life is now dairying as it should be, much reduced stress levels in cows and herdsman! Milk yields down about 10%, but almost none dumped. Vet meds down substantially, much better grazing.

Still a handful of holstein barreners left, but will be glad when they have gone.

Tried a few BS from a local farm, got on extremely well with them. As cheesemakers we are keen on the beta kappa casein, and they fitted into the farm well. We tried a few BS Holstein cross, but they tend to carry a bit more condition than BS when fed on a Holstein diet and were difficult to get in calf. We have a few now on BS diet, hope they do a bit better. We prefer to keep pedigree, as being in a clean area can get decent prices for heifers (back on topic!)

Did you ever think of montbeliardes as they have the beta kappa casein as well?

No, but a fellow East Angilan cheesemaker has gone that way. I have not spoken to him recently to see how he is getting on with them.

We have some, the problem we have with them is the feet and also temperament. We use them in a crossbreeding situation with holstein first then viking red and then monty. We have dropped the monty as we bought some holstein x montys and they were a absolute disaster for feet and temperament. Considering replacing that part of the rotation with German Brown Swiss.

We are a bit wary of German sires at present, until they can sort out the genetics and genomically test for BCSE (bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus) which we have had in a couple of imports. The Germans have this in black and whites also, but no-one else seems to have heard about it. There is one German university researching B&W and another one BS

Why 'German Swiss' over the Swiss, Italian, France, North America and even British Swiss??

They tend to have a bit more strength so should be a good replacement for the monty in the rotation.

This is why we are pleased with the BS - the 12 month figures still have quite a few Holstein (reflected in milk yield), now over 90% BS in 3 month figures
