I have removed the hard drive from an old desk top - couldn't erase it while fitted.
What's the safest and simplest way to dispose of it?

Smash it up with a sledgehammer then put some in wheelie bin each week or dispose of a little in different public bins in various towns. Much safer than burying it although if you know of someone laying a base for slurry tank or something you could smash it up and put remains in there.
Melting it down in bonfire or with blowtorch would also work.
Download a cheap drive wiper utility like killdisk, put it on a cd.
Boot from the CD.
Find the drive you want to clean up, select it, and the drive will be wiped several times normally 3 passes is fine.
Take drive and dispose of it with other E waste for recycling.
There is no need to smash, burn, bury or treat a hard drive like it is radioactive waste.
There are some bargain world-cruise offers just now, many of which pass through the deepest
stretches of the Atlantic Ocean.
2 mins at full power in the microwave would do it.......
There are more engines killed through lack of water than through lack of oil
She can make an exception for hard disks Shirley? It may not do the disk much harm though, or the microwave, because the complete metal box will just reflect the power. It's only rings of metal that are a problem, partial or complete.
I ought to know what the base metal of hard disks is, but I don't, except that they're very nice and shiney when you get them out, like CDs only about 100x as tough.
There will be a couple of useful neodymium magnets inside each hard drive which I used to find the screws in a stud wall when hanging a mirror in the bathroom, once it's opened the drive is irreversibly damaged by exposure to dust.
What do people have on their hard drives that warrants such extreme measures?
I can't think I have ever had anything on mine that needs worrying about. I'd chuck it in the fire if there was.
I take old hard drives apart
Take out the disc they are very high quality mirrors
hanging in garden gives most garden destroyer the scares
Except slugs of course!!
