    Identify the plough

Can anyone here identify what model this plough is? It was bought new by Dad when he bought a new Dexta in Dec 58. I Know that it ia Ransomes, but what model is it. I have two photos of it which i took after i found it in my surplus machinery storage area (nettle patch). One of the photos is of the back of one of the boards, does anyone know what the figures mean, the other photo is of th plough.

its a ransomes Robin TS54, one of the ones thats worth a fair bit in good order, the lack of a depth wheel devalues it a bit though.

Epic 41k mouldboards will not add to the value either.

What are the key differences between a 54 and 59?

I thought it might be a Robin, that is why I asked. What were the epic 41 mould boards for and what are the ideal boards for this plough?

if you can find a set of yl183s then you will have a highly desireable plough

    Re: Identify the plough

Epic 41 are semi digger bodies for ploughing at around 9" deep.

As above yl are the ones you want or TCN for classic ploughing.

    Re: Identify the plough

The EPIC boards were for general work on med to heavy land, and are not bad for farm ploughing, but if it is match ploughing then you want to fit YL boards as they are a good all round board in all soil types, john

    Re: Identify the plough

dont forget you'll need new frogs aswell to change from Epic to YL

the TS 54 (robin) was the plough made to fit the dexta and the TS59 was larger and made for the diesel major

So was it wider on the crosshaft then? Both are basically the same?

a TS59 is a completely different plough to a TS54, they are bigger all round and heavier, related but in no way the same plough

Okay - what I am trying to get at is how you were able to definitively know it was a TS 54.

You can still get TCN boards from Westlake Plough parts but they are very expensive!

    Re: Identify the plough

I've got what I think is a 3 furrow TS59 looking at pictures on the web. In similar storage and condition to the OP I'm afraid Father always referred to it as the "Dexta Plough" although he ran a Major at the same time.

You can tell by the shape.
Also there should be a Ransomes plate on the front if it hasn't fallen off.

    Re: Identify the plough

Plough could be a TS 1013 which was the same frame/legs as a robin but built with no depth wheel for the tractors with draught control, TS 59 's were also built without depth wheels in their later prodution in the form of the ts 59Z

    Re: Identify the plough

the easiest way to tell between them is how the legs bolt to the frame, the robin has a 'swan neck' type of leg fitted with two bolts holding it to the frame, and the TS59 has a much straighter leg, that goes nearly straight up and fixes to the frame with three bolts

Now that makes much more sense when I think of the TS 59 at home also - ours is a TS 59 S.

    Re: Identify the plough

Thanks very much for the info on the plough. If the EPIC boards were ideally for 9" of soil I dont know why dad bought it as I dont know anywhere on the farm we have that depth.
Ideally then the plough needs YL or TCN boards.
