    Calving jack recommendations

Ours dates back to the 70s and has saved dozens of calves (and cows) but could do with a new one.
The plastic head seems to have gone brittle and pieces break off it, although still usable for now.

    Hi

Vink are very good, stainless steel, good ratchet, end fits around back end of cow, tip: go for the longer one, also think there's a "beef" head. Fantastic tool, but do watch out if the cow starts turning if you haven't got her behind a gate, seen the vet swiped into the sh1t one night!

They don't slip, but as has been pointed out they need a wide space to fling around in.
We sometimes have to use them on anguses too

This is similar to what we have.
What is the advantage of the extra gubbings at the cow end?
I'm wary of getting a different style that proves cumbersome in situations where a simpler style like we have might be better - e.g. when they decide to lay down with their backside almost in a corner!

it's a non slip head, fits around the cows hips, far easier to work yourself than the one you posted in the link. Also i've never had any problems when cows go down like you said with the non slip head jack

I would go for the vink one as well. The head stays on the cows rear end without slipping offif she moves or if your not 100% square.

4WD have you not had the old one slip off when the calf is half way out and cow moves and then you have to release the jack to get back in position and then jack up again, not a probelem with the Vink.

Even though we have Angus calves, the Vink makes the job easy on the odd occasion it just needs a little pull, or a big one!

+8 for the vink, just be carefull if the cow moves, local vet badly injured by shaft hitting him on head a few years ago!!

+9 for the Vink. Yes expensive compared to the others, but when you've used one, you'd never entertain anything else.

+10 for the Vink. Don't plan to use it but better to be prepared than not. Used it on one fat heifer so far, no vet, no assistant, just me the heifer and the Vink.

+10 for the Vink. Wouldn't contemplate any other design.

I didn't realise they still made those damned round shafted HK things. If they do, they should be stopped!

+15, vink is what my neighbour has. Not going to get one, just going to borrow it, and him, if I ever need it again. Cow went down and we got the live calf out
