The two that are lying down with the bottoms facing the camera look as if they are full of something. Concrete ?
What about a wild theory ? If they are old enough to be considered staddles, are they a quick road blocking mechanism in case the Nazis had invaded us in WW11 ? They would be heavy if filled with concrete. Just a thought.
I was at the farming museum at Murton today and they had some staddle stones just like these. One had a broken top and it showed a square hole like in this picture.
Finally got the answer (well friend gave up on our guessing). Mounts for light ack-ack guns on pill boxes.
