Are they not rollers from a mill for rolling corn or oaks or such?

That was my first thought but they look a bit too heavy. The square hole almost looks like it is made to fit on a shaft of some sort.

This was my first thought also.
Don't itch for something if you're not prepared to scratch for it.

Does look like that which might means a staddle if stone not available I guess.

But surely if you were going to make staddle stones using concrete you would make a mould (or a few) both for the bottoms and the tops and then fill them with concrete and use the moulds again ?

What about a wild theory ? If they are old enough to be considered staddles, are they a quick road blocking mechanism in case the Nazis had invaded us in WW11 ? They would be heavy if filled with concrete. Just a thought.

I was at the farming museum at Murton today and they had some staddle stones just like these. One had a broken top and it showed a square hole like in this picture.

    Oh-Mr-Mainwaring!

Well the friend who whatsapped the photo with our old group of college mates informs me they are indeed WW2 defense objects. He was not any more specific but I should have guessed immediately as he is a real military buff.

Finally got the answer (well friend gave up on our guessing). Mounts for light ack-ack guns on pill boxes.
