    Powdered calf colostrum

We have nearly run out of our calf colostrum replacer and wondered what peoples thoughts are on the different brands out there? We currently have Volostrum.

    Re: Powdered calf colostrum

I was at a meeting in which George Caldow, SAC vet was speaking.

He had some very interesting points to say about colostrum. Essentially, most of what we get here is rubbish.

Cows colostrum contains 50 antibodies/immunoglobulins. (I have forgotten the units of measurement, but you'll get the point.

In the USA there is legislation that states that:
A colostrum supplement must contain 40-60 antibodies.
A colostrum replacement must contain 150-200 antibodies.

However in the UK we have no such legislation. Here most colostrum supplements will contain about 15 antibodies.

    Watch what you are buying.

We are sucklers, anything that is slow drinking try to milk the cow if she will stand but some wont stand to let you milk them so it has to be the replacer and any I do milk off goes straight into the calf in question.

Do you know how many antibodies/imugloblins there are in your colostrum? as in OldMcDonalds post

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Colostrum supplements are classed as feedstuff, and not as a veterinary medicine. As such, no manufacturer or supplier in the UK is permitted under EU legislation to divulge the IgG content of their product. As the ASA stated in a recent judgement against one colostrums supplier Ďno claims or references to IgG are permitted in the marketing of colostrum products unless a marketing authorisation had been issued by the VMDí. To the best of our knowledge no supplier of colostrums products in the UK has VMD marketing authorisation.

What we can say with confidence is that the Farmerís Choice range of colostrums have been carefully formulated to meet the needs of the new born animal not only for IgGs, but also for energy, vitamins, minerals, and other key ingredients to help it meet the challenges in its first days of life.

To find out more about the EU legislation visit http://www.hma.eu/uploads/media/VMRF_086_01.pdfand to find out more about the importance of balance of ingredients in a colostrums supplement visit www.coxagri.com

    Kind regards

+ 1 calves are too valuable not to be knowing what the value is of the colostrum replacer/supplement ( which ever it is )
Best to stick to drawing excess colostrum off previously calved cows, and use the tubs for a wee boost

Is it feasible to import powdered colostrum from the US where it has a known IgG content?

Still cant see why you dont freeze your own . milk the surplus from the quieter cows and freeze in litre bottles. far better than anything you buy.

cause its a complete pain in the ass:lolk::lolk::lolk::lolk::lolk:

been trying to come up with something to harvest it rather than hand milking for a while now. somthing like a garden sprayer with a hand pump... even if it only did one teat at a time... but some research suggestted constant vaccum (without pulsation) would do harm to the udder.

we're freezing into 1liter zip lock bags and laying flat for fast thawing.

    Re: Powdered calf colostrum

I think it's absolutely crazy that a farmer has only got the company's own marketing and claims on which to base his colostrum choice.

For all we know all the powdered colostrum on the market could have no or next to no immunoglubulins, and we'd be none the wiser!
