    combine harvester

    Hi All,

I have a some spring barley to harvest this year. plan to grow winter barley next year. I was looking a buying a combine to get the job done at the right time instead of waiting on some contractor to arrive when it suits him. 5K budget. I have been looking around and it seems to be a buyers market at the moment. Problem is i have seen a few small new holland or class at 2-3K but have also been offered a very tidy John deere 1085 at 5K. this is has 10 times the capacity i need but seems like a better buy. Which would be the better investment? my main concern is the JD being heavy and running into problems in the wet. Any thoughts?

At that end of the market ( 5k )condition is everything, age becomes almost irrelevant as long as you can still get parts.
If you don't know much about combines find a local independent agricultural engineer who does, pay him to check a few machines over before you part with cash.
Unless you particularly need your own combine this year don't rush, be patient & the right machine will come your way. There are still very good older machines out there waiting to be bought.

If you can find a good independent that specialises in a particular make and a dealer is not too far away then it may pay to go with that make. I have not driven a combine for over 30 years but have a tractor and a baler where that has worked reasonably well. There has been quite a lot on this subject on other forums and my take would be down to JD, NH or Claas. One aspect of size is that a seemingly large capacity might mean pushing an old machine less hard and being able to be more picky about when to go. You perhaps also need to find out which marque has the best back up for older machine spares.
