Started here by English botanist Stephen King who failed year after year post war to successfully grow them in England.
When he looked around the world for suitable places, he settled on Victoria, but the Victorian police would have none of it. With time remaining on his boat ticket, he came to Tas. for a look - and the rest is history!
I have a personal connection: his polymath son designed the Weedswiper control circuit, as far as we know the first successful wiper controller with electronic feedback control for optimum efficiency. (Sorry, couldn't resist praising him).
