Heres a few snaps rural and ag related from recent driving trips in the lower half of Western Australia

2 weeks ago we went from Perth south to Albany, west to Walpole and then back up to perth in a sort of giant U shape and on the two long legs we managed to cover more countryside by going between the areas we had covered before. Then at the end of last week we covered the mid-bottom end of the southern grain area heading out to Hyden/Wave Rock and doing a sort of big oval on a lot of rural back roads.


As usual there were plenty of road trains, we came across several road works in the 3000kms we have done. Sealed roads are much the same as their dirt roads except they do more compaction using tankers to haul water so they can compact the sand down solid, the top coat is bitumen with chippings. Their No1 tool is the grader whether is rural dirt roads, sealed roads or freeways.

The chap with the JD had obviously taken the outer duals off for use around the paddock!

Saw a lot of sheep all seemingly living on nothing in stubbles. In the photo here they are all around on of the bunds that we have seen more of this time, there seems to be more farms trying to capture rain run off from fields and roads, many have a solar panel driving a pump of some sorts, a modern replacement for the old "silver cross" windmill pumps now seen mostly derelict.

The dog in a ute is from Corrigin, looks like they are overdue for another try at the world record!


Kulin had a small museum that was closed, but across the road was something - see the next group

Across the road was this old beast with a Scania V8 engine, and industrial loading shovel rear axle and a lot of ingenuity

Driving around we had seen a few places where cultivatiob had taken place and a few paddocks where it looked to of been sown, the majority of farmers were still holding back.

Heading north from Wave rock we came across this big JD and disc harrows, the tractor had no "reggeo plate" so maybe it was a demo unit? not sure but it looked like it hadn't done much work same as the discs

Earlier on we were on the "Tin Horse Highway" where there were DIY models of horses everywhere, but later on in the middle of no where we came across a long fence with all manner of footware wired to the fence! Then on the other side its underware!!!

Final pictures are Sonic sprayers, just across the road from a JD dealer in the smallest of towns!

Saw 5 of the truck carrying these huge water tanks, they must of been heading to dealers from the manufacturer?

Then we got caught up behind someone getting itchy to start seeding! we just followed for quite a few k's - it was no good trying to overtake as his mirrors were as much use as ornaments and all of them had their hazard lights flashing so if any of them were to turn off you would get any warning!

Bit further on near York we caught up with the smoke from stubble fires that were popping up all over the place. The smell in York reminded you of the old days in the UK.

Also there are a couple of long shots at 110kph of someone limespreading way over in the distance

These were from the run down to Albany, suddenly came across straw on the move, a combine that didn't really warrant the oversize warnings, a dealer moving a trailed sprayer with an HGV unit and a small farmer/contractor with tidy/newish lime spreaders and a soft spot for Fastracs!

Re the Upton tractor (with Scania engine) you remind me of a story on the ABC and elsewhere of some weeks back, of a one-off giant Upton tractor:

Frame of 100mm plate; the drawbar weighs one tonne, the fuel tank three, as I remember! Numerous other references via Google.

The photograph of the grader reminded me of France in the seventies, before we paid for all their new roads through the EU!
I went to France in green Morris 1800 and came back in a brown one!

FF, you always leave me despairing after our trips down under......
Never seem to come across the depth of farming stuff that you find.
Been around some of those roads as well.
Mrs FF must be easier to steer whilst on "Holiday"!
