    Poultry farm diversification

Hi- we are seeing poultry farms popping up all over the place at the moment and it got us thinking (we are currently in limbo - got lots of ideas for diversifying but unsure which we to turn) .. would possibly look at broiler units rather than layers- we have experience with poultry on a small hobby scale (we breed rare / pure breed hens) - is there a minimum size before processing companies will even consider giving you a contract? What are the start up costs? We have the land already. Is it feasible to do in multiple mobile units rather than a massive shed? Does that make planning easier? Are there any grants available? Sorry- lots of questions! Advice welcome.

There are some companies around who will pay you to rear for them. They'll advise, put in the day olds and provide feed etc. and pay you about 1.50 per bird reared (turkeys). Might be an option.
Don't itch for something if you're not prepared to scratch for it.

The lady who works in our office worked for a food processor. They bought chickens from Brazil at 32p per bird. I am told by a young man I know that the firm in Grantham he works for is still buying them at that price.

I couldn't agree more, when everyone is running one way you run the other unless the house is on fire!
