    Case 1455 gearbox

Their seems to be quite a few 1455 for sale here and there at the moment but all are 30k box models. We once had a 856 and 5130 that where 30k and got them converted to 40k by the gear reduction lever cogs by taking the side plate off the gear box. Can this be done with 1255 and 1455. I'm on the look out for a new toy to play with but in this day and age 30k is to slow. I've looked through training and workshop manuals to see if the gearbox lubrication is different on 30k to 40k on 956 and 1056 tractors but theirs no difference so I can't see it doing and harm swapping the gears around but have no idea about the 1255 and 1455

I rang up about that 1 yesterday. It's got 8200 hours on and is 30k. He wants to let it run the auction and I go on holiday end of the week so job's fuked there. It's easy on a 5130. I watched it get done. Odd I remember right it needed different cog's but can't remember how much they were.

A 12/1455 has a totally different transmission to either 5100 series or 56 series. Cyrush should be able to tell if a 40k can be done but it wont be an easy job thats for sure ! But the 55 series are not really anything other than field tractors !

Being a ZF gearbox, it won't be easy and won't be cheap!!!

Not an easy job as you have to split tractor then strip out front of gearbox and rebuild, around 30 hrs work as i recall, we did one in the training school, and we had all the special tooling available.

I drove a 1455 with a 40K box and all I can say is that it was gutless. Took miles to get it up to speed. Best stick with 30K really! Wear and tear and fuel use will also be higher.

When going from 30 to 40k the step up was to big (between 5 and 6th gear) So you had to shift from 5 high to 6 low and then 6 high doing 2 sticks at a time. You got used to it after a while but far from pratical! We mostly stuck with it doing 30 rather than 40. After using it on a trailer for a few months I found it more of a pulling tractor than a transport tractor. Turncircle of a cruise ship!

Thats a good point Niels, we had both a 30K and a 40K and found that when setting off at the same time the 30K would only be a few minutes behind the 40K as the latter would always die when it came to hills and would take a while to get up to the magic 40k.

Our one does about 45k, just flies along really. Wouldn't want a 30k one

    Re: Case 1455 gearbox

It will sit on the rake all summer and we go silaging all over the place so no way am I going at 30k. All the other tractors are 50k and the forager sits at 28mph so 30k is out the question. The 1056 does about 44 45k. If a 1455 won't pull a rake along a road at 40k theirs summat wrong.

No I havent enquired about the price! Just thought it looked the part. Bought a 5150 off Startin a while back and it turned out to be a good un.
I wouldn't think it would be in their yard very long.

There is not summat wrong but the 1455 was introduced in 1981 and 40k was not relevant at the time! Unless you bought a Trantor or so. They are just not really build for it IMO. It will do 40/45k and on a rake it should be ok I reckon.

At the dealership I work for we are turning tractors back from 50k to 40k as it saves so much in fuel, tyres and wear and tear. As Howard says in the end it is only a few minutes that you lose.

Remember 1455's only have a 21 spline pto shaft so may have to get a new pto shaft for your rake.
