Was thinking of buying a Laptop for in the house to save having to sit at the desktop in the office to surf the net. The laptop would really only be used for surfing the net and looking at photos. Any ideas as to what make and where is the best place to buy?

Try these , look for the toshibas or hp/compaq , etc just got a hp one with a 17" screen and good spec for £300 , really good quality , most are clearance and brand new [dont bother with advent , packard bell , will only last 12 months]

Just posted in another thread. In my experience Dell have drifted on quality a little lately. HP and Toshiba are really good.
See faulty laptop thread for the full text but don't (do not) DO NOT buy a Packard Bell and Acer aren't too clever either. Acer seem to age quickly. And have a look on Tesco Direct for good deals. |

Is that a good deal in PC World, sign up for mobile broadband and get a free laptop , or are they just dumping the crap ones ?

They're stitching you up with an expensive 3g deal with a tight "fair usage" policy. No such thing as a free lunch in my experience.

andybk,I have an old ( very old ) advent 7001 laptop. No 1 son had it a school, then he upgraded and he passed it to me. It has travelled hundreds of thousands of miles in aircraft and Toyota Landcruisers, and has stopped functioning once only. It was repaired in the middle of Central Asia for the princley sum of a bottle of Vodka, and is sending this post to BFF. What more can I say,one day when it decides to cease working I will replace it,but until then .................

I've got an old(ish) Acer laptop. Bought it secondhand from a friend in the IT business. It was completely wiped and then reloaded with up to date software. Very good machine but now i only use it for farm stuff : Farmworks and Field Track. Got a new iMac in the office now and when the time comes i will probably get an Apple laptop too.
