Hi all I have recently purchased a 1986 IH 956XL 2WD black and red. She was bought on the understanding that she has gearbox bother. The problem is that you can select gears but once you try to let the clutch out she will stall the engine. Any ideas before I have a look??????

Sounds like a gear to shaft seizure, or a gear is engaged when it should have disengaged. Difficult to know exactly with out being able to look.

The Doncaster tractor problem was I believe external linkage wear. This is more likely internal and could be the selectors leaving a gear engaged.

Hey there are not many would buy a 956 with gearbox trouble with the hope of repairing themselves. Special tools needed and parts if needed will cost a fortune.

Thanks for the replies. The main reason for buying is that I already have a 4wd 956xl which has poor tinwork. The thought being if I cannot fix or is not economical she will be usefull for parts. Would be great if it were only a selector problem though. Will keep you posted.

Most likely cause is a simple repair, a pin locating the selector shafts is prone to breaking, it is behind the fuel tank on the RHS, there is a large core plug, you can feel in to see if this is your problem, 99 times out of a 100 it will be, it can replaced from the outside with strip down.
If you are still in bother let me know I'll explain the job to you |

Have also had these symptons on a Fordson, where bearing had blown apart, effectifley seizing up two shafts. You could have it in neutral and still drive it, or select a gear and it would try to stall.
In my case it was an easy fix. |
