    Re: ewe lambs

Would you be intending to sell them next year? Not being funny - does anyone want a CharX ewe? You could find yourself with gimmers that arnt the most desirable.

I think id be tempted to use a...
  2. Re: Is it time we all got the same milk price as the dedicated Supermarket Contracts

cant remember where i read that fact but it certainly stuck in my mind.

  3. Re: Is it time we all got the same milk price as the dedicated Supermarket Contracts

Im in SW Scotland - i know of a fair few farms which since prices started dropping theyve started milking more cows. I also know one or two which have stepped up from 2x to 3x a day milking! Is there...
  4. Re: Is it time we all got the same milk price as the dedicated Supermarket Contracts

If they HAD to pay everyone the same price - what way do you see it going? Those at the bottom getting more, or the ones at the top getting less??

Theres only 1 outcome, and it doesnt fall in the...
  5. Re: Not an April Fool, rather a Super Ewe.

    Very good!!

Takes the shine off my 'dry' gimmer (hadnt lambed/showed no signs by end of lambing) which lambed a nice ewe lamb, 30th July last year out on the hill. Kept the lamb on her till Feb,...

    Re: O.P. Poisoning.

That is why its been in the news. I believe its something to do with a report from 1990 highlighting the potential dangers to human health going missing, seemingly destroyed by the HSE!

    My guess...

    +1

Itl be scary how many units are actually making losses like youve quoted.... but its mostly wiped out with the subs, or subsidised by another 'secondary' enterprise. Making them somehow think...

    Re: Why am I farming?

You cant split costs if youve only 1 enterprise though. The cattle would have to cover everything. Also depends if he is an owner occupier or tenant. Here for example diversification, and pig farming...

    Re: Why am I farming?

Agree, but i dont believe there was any mention or notion of moving into another sector, or any form of deiversification from the comments i was replying to, which simply said recude numbers to cut...

    Re: Why am I farming?

I dont disagree. Its why i said it would be better to put all the herd down the road, rather as some of them.

    Re: Why am I farming?

Your going round in circles. I agree your fixed costs dont alter - but if you cut your herd in half, and the fixed costs are the same, then the COP doubles. Making it even harder to make a profit off...

    Re: Why am I farming?

The fixed cost does not alter, but the cost per head certainly does! Pushing COP per head UP when livestock numbers are lowered.

If you are paying for machinery and rent (or even the bank) and...

    Re: Why am I farming?

Would be as good putting the lot down the road with that suggestion...
Cutting numbers can put more 'running/fixed costs' pressure on the stock thats left, potentially making less numbers even less...

Re: One for Land Rover Fanatics....

All the LR/RR production will move to India eventually, as you say - costs far too much to make cars here.

Looking at the new models LR have launched or are launching, i doubt very much there will...

Re: One for Land Rover Fanatics....

So why is the Defender to continue, being built in India, and sold all over the world? Its only within the EU it is stopping being sold - because it fails the EURO NCAP tests spectacularly.

    Re: Why am I farming?

Yes, but in that same breath your argument comes undone.

That struggle/fight or poor handling of animals can happen at any point in any slaughter house. It can happen at markets and on farm. Does...
