Very first idea that came to mind was, make a stand containing your preferred heating device, to sit an old loader bucket on. Pick up the spuds in the bucket, drop it on to the heater stand, then pick up the bucket again when boiled.....Jeez do I need to patent this idea

I was thinking one of them galvanized dumpsters for hazmat (??).... Has a bung plug in bottom and you can close the top for faster heat. Make your heat stand out of stone or whatever is handy and fire it with whatever is cheap or easy.....

You could even be creative and put a grate about 1/3 so the tators don't get in the water and just get steamed so they keep more goodies in???

I'll try to find a picture of what I threw away when we bought the place (and what just about every neighbor has thrown out since)...

I don't keep pigs or grow potatoes, hence the question. Why cook the potatoes, won't pigs eat them raw?

I think they need to be boiled to swill so the old guffies don't choke on em, we have a few stock feed tat ties here but the guv won't feed em to pigs we have getting fat in the paddock..

Boiling them softens them obviously but makes the starch grains open and the pigs will derive more energy from them??
My old dad used to use the cast iron tank that was in the old washouse , and fill it with tats and water , then light a fire under it in the grate

Look for a s/h Farvis tar boiler. I got one for boiling dog food. Chuck a couple of small bales of straw and a match at it to burn the tar off. You won't get a tonne into one but its the best thing I can suggest. I've one here going cheap if you are near Inverness but it is mostly welds now!

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking of a 1000 gallon tank, held up by breeze blocks, put potatoes in weldmesh thing, put in with telehandler, boil with lid, then lift out, problem I suspect will be the high cost of / lots of wood needed and very inefficient.

Wont the energy used to boil the water that sits around 1000kg of taters be in excess of what good you will get out of it, and so make the whole job a non starter?

    Dont know, just asking...

Don't put too much water in the tank the steam will do the work.
Just a low heat for a few hours will do the trick

the grandfather used an old portable steam engine and used a pipe into a pile on a concrete pad and steamed them.
it was fired up for a day and the spuds reduced to al dente....
i'd do similar but use an old tank for a boiler and do them in an old grain bucket a bit at a time.
we do feed spuds to pigs but just shred them through a beet cutter, ok in small amounts.
