    3 year old grass seed.

I've some unused grass seed purchased 3 years ago. It's an overseeding mix - tetraploids, no clover.
It's been stored in the bags - cool, dry and dark. Could I expect this to grow if scattered now?

Some of it will be viable, I wouldn't rely on it to give a good new ley on a field scale, but you could use it on poached areas or something.
It will depend on how good conditions were for storage, keeping over winter (in a dry place) is less of a problem than summer heat I expect.

Man who worked in New Zealand for a lawn seed grower told me once that it was common to keep seed for several years.

As i sounds like it's been stored OK it should be fine. We put an overseeding grass/clover mix in last autumn that had been on farm 2 yrs and it has come absolutely fine.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably mix it with some new seed, containing clover, and use it for overseeding when I get the chance.
I wasn't sure about the germination test, tho' I might give it a try.

I suspect if it has been kept absolutely dry it will have only lost a tiny proportion of its germ. If in doubt sow it slightly heavier. If you have clover in the mix it will fill any space left in a sward anyway.
