Re: Silage, Straw and Hay prices

Flying a kite here. I am located in East Yorkshire in a very arable area with plenty of straw available. We get lots of wagons arriving in July/August/September arriving empty from the West of the country carting straw back West. The question is how much would round/big bale silage be delivered here at that time of year when returning West with a backload of straw? I could possible arrange the straw if that was attractive to anyone or possibly even buy and bale the straw myself? Looking for 100-150 round bale silage or big bale equivalent.

Now then eastender , it would depend on who what where and when, I run over your way all year round, I would get 50 bales on, I'd need between 5 and 10 per bale for transport, where abouts in yorks are you??

Got a few hundred six string Heston silage bales (5ft long).
Good quality stuff, soft silage rather than drier haylage.
Whats it worth and is there demand for it at the moment?
    cheers

And good quality haylage, currently supplying happy horse customers.

In south cumbria and sensibly priced.

What value per tonne for threshed ryegrass hay this coming season and what is the best size to bale it in? Small bale job seems to have a died a death (local horse foak seem to have gone on to haylage) and I'm wondering whether its worth baling at all so far from the west or whether just to chop it and keep the nutrients.

Nobody have a view or no one can be arsed?

    20 delivered in the end.
next question, how many to the tonne or do I have to stick one on the back of the Ranger and take it to the nearest weighbridge?

It depends how tightly they've been baled. I've had bales range from 220-280kgs in same field from same baler on same day. Weigh a few if them on diet feeder and take the average.

So everyone that feeds hay has a diet feeder lying around?
if I had one I might just have thought of that, thanks anyway!

No I don't expect that everyone has one and I wasn't trying to be a smarty pants, but unless you live in the back of beyond there's usually someone nearby who has one that can be used. I don't have one but know quite a few farms locally that do and can call on a favour now and then. One bale on back of pick-up isn't going to be a representative sample to be fair to anyone......... it could be the heavy one or the light one.

Best way I would think, get your tractor n loader and delivery trailer, weigh it, return loaded with x bales, you then have an average weight, n'est pa ici ..

Trying to put a value on crop of standing wheat. Done the usual of adding up all the inputs and adding a rent, seems a bit steep. Wondered if anyone had traded any wholecrop?
